Am I a candidate for prostate artery embolization (PAE)?

Medically reviewed by Todd Lehrfeld, MD · October 5, 2026

PAE may be an option when an enlarged prostate causes bothersome urinary symptoms. A consultation helps determine whether PAE or another treatment fits your needs. Symptoms and a quiz score alone cannot establish eligibility.

When is a PAE consultation worth considering?

Ask about an evaluation if frequent urination, nighttime bathroom trips, urgency or a weak stream is affecting your daily life. Bring up treatments you have tried, what helped and any side effects. Your team can discuss your priorities and the reasons you are considering alternatives to surgery.

What does the evaluation involve?

Your clinicians review your symptoms, health history and prostate imaging. Depending on your situation, assessment may include a urine test, examination, PSA testing or prostate imaging. The purpose is to understand the cause of your symptoms and whether treatment is appropriate. Not every patient needs the same tests.

Who decides whether PAE is appropriate?

A urologist and interventional radiologist assess suitability together. At Jersey Urology Group, your consultation includes discussion of PAE alongside medication and other available treatments. Dr. Joel Wolf is an interventional radiologist who performs PAE.

What should I ask at the consultation?

• Are my symptoms related to prostate enlargement, or is another cause possible?

• What additional evaluation do I need?

• How do PAE, medication and other procedures compare for my situation?

• What benefits, risks and possibility of further treatment should I consider?

• What should I expect for recovery and follow-up?

• What must my insurer approve, and what costs should I confirm?

Does the symptom quiz tell me whether I qualify?

No. The quiz helps describe your symptoms before a visit. It is not a diagnosis or a treatment recommendation. Bring your answers and questions to your appointment.
